US Sailing Awards 2016 Championship of Champions to Lake Bluff Yacht Club

Lake Bluff, IL, December 15, 2016 - The Lake Bluff Yacht Club is pleased to announce that US Sailing has selected it to host the 2016 Championship of Champions to be held on October 6 – 9, 2016 in Lake Bluff, IL. The event will be sailed in one-design Sunfish sailboats on Lake Michigan.

"We are extremely honored to be selected to host this event, which is one of the most prestigious sailing championships in the entire country," said John Palizza, Commodore of the Lake Bluff Yacht Club. "We feel that it is a real testament to the strength of the Sunfish racing program we have built in our community." Doug Warren, Regatta Chair, added, "The Championship of Champions brings together many of the best sailors in the United States as only the champions of select one-design classes are eligible to sail in the event. With the Sunfish being a single-handed boat, and all of the boats being alike, it means that it is the best sailor, not the best boat, that prevails in the regatta."

The Championship of Champions was inaugurated by US Sailing in 1976. Nineteen competitors are selected from nominees by their class associations who are current national or North American champions of their respective classes. Eligible are sailors who normally sail in the U.S., are members of US Sailing and are members of a club, class or association affiliated with US Sailing. The championship is held in a different class each year, and boats are supplied and sailed in a round robin format. Additionally, each year a guest helm is invited. Invited helms have included winner of the Rolex Yachtsman and Yachtswoman of the Year, Olympians, and other sailing luminaries. Classes in which the event has been held run the gamut from conventional to cutting edge and have included Y-Flyers, Snipes, Hobie Cats, J-24’s, Sunfish and Etchells,

The Championship is named in honor of Jack Brown who was noted for his service as a judge, regatta organizer and member of US Sailing Committees.
